creative guest books

with my wedding less than a month away, i have been busy squeezing out every ounce of my creativity to plan for the big day.  while looking around to find inspirations for an original guest book, i came across some very cute ideas.

rock climb in style

now there's a wall i wouldn't mind climbing.  it's like the rugged sport got translated into a language i understand.  this stylish rock climbing wall was created by nendo for a fitness club in omotesando, tokyo. the inspiration originated in their brand concept, "becoming beautiful through movement."

back to the future

this is a really fun project by photographer, Irina Werning, capturing people as they reenact a childhood photo. its amazing how the clothes are almost always identical, just bigger.  i think this is a cute idea for a birthday party or a wedding if you can create one yourself.

yum: afternoon at the ritz

i spent a lovely sunday with my girlfriends having afternoon tea at the chihuly lounge of ritz carlton singapore.

i love the table and the settings.  its gold on gold but still so elegant.

i couldn't stop with the mini food plates. i think this was my favorite part. prawns, salmon and egg roe, octopus... all so tasty but each one is gone in one bite :)

on the other hand, the dessert bar looks pretty crazy, probably because their theme for the month is pop!  i love the lego shaped chocolates, but these are probably more enjoyable for the kids.

spotted nyonya

here's a very cute, contemporary interpretation of the nyonya porcelain vessels. it's designed by a singaporean design studio, hans tan studio in collaboration with FARM.

unhappy hipsters

i came across a really funny blog called unhappy hipsters. it will give you a fresh new perspective to modern design with all that sarcasm. they take beautiful photos from popular architecture and interior magazines and create a story for each one based on how cold and lonely true modern living can be.

"There’s nothing like the comforting sight of one’s own home after a long, difficult day."

"Sick and tired of unsolicited tips from strangers on how to raise little Ottoman, Womb felt suddenly and inconsolably alone. Oh, the incredible isolation of life post-pregnancy."

"Maybe he’d have more visitors if his kitchen was stocked with more than just shattered dreams."

"It was punishment unique to her modernist parents: hours of solitary confinement with classic and contemporary design icons, followed by stern yet uncomfortably hypocritical lectures on freedom of expression and rejecting tradition."

ink calendar

this is very intriguing.  the ink calender by oscar diaz uses the capillary action of the ink on the paper to display the dates. the set up is very simple, just paper dipped in ink at one end, and the numbers in the calendar will appear daily as the ink is absorbed slowly.

good design is

i like to keep my blog about the fun and pretty but i'm signing off this week on a more inspirational note, with something i like to remind myself of and stay true to as a designer. it's the ten principles of design by the industrial designer, Dieter Rams. as a minimalist at heart this is definitely something i live by.

"Design is a very important thing in our lives, or should be if it is made in the right way." -rams

ten principles of design

1. Good design is innovative
The possibilities for innovation are not, by any means, exhausted. Technological development is always offering new opportunities for innovative design. But innovative design always develops in tandem with innovative technology, and can never be an end in itself.

2. Good design makes a product useful

A product is bought to be used. It has to satisfy certain criteria, not only functional, but also psychological and aesthetic. Good design emphasises the usefulness of a product whilst disregarding anything that could possibly detract from it.

3. Good design is aesthetic
The aesthetic quality of a product is integral to its usefulness because products we use every day affect our person and our well-being. But only well-executed objects can be beautiful.

4. Good design makes a product understandable

It clarifies the product’s structure. Better still, it can make the product talk. At best, it is self-explanatory.

5. Good design is unobtrusive

Products fulfilling a purpose are like tools. They are neither decorative objects nor works of art. Their design should therefore be both neutral and restrained, to leave room for the user’s self-expression.

6. Good design is honest

It does not make a product more innovative, powerful or valuable than it really is. It does not attempt to manipulate the consumer with promises that cannot be kept.

7. Good design is long-lasting

It avoids being fashionable and therefore never appears antiquated. Unlike fashionable design, it lasts many years – even in today’s throwaway society.

8. Good design is thorough, down to the last detail

Nothing must be arbitrary or left to chance. Care and accuracy in the design process show respect towards the consumer.

9. Good design is environmentally-friendly

Design makes an important contribution to the preservation of the environment. It conserves resources and minimises physical and visual pollution throughout the lifecycle of the product.

10. Good design is as little design as possible

Less, but better – because it concentrates on the essential aspects, and the products are not burdened with non-essentials. Back to purity, back to simplicity.

the new wedding cake

i'm going for my wedding cake tasting today!  i have my heart set on the 8 tiered traditional white cake but it seems there are many cute alternatives for the modern day couples.  i've done a post on creative wedding cakes before so here is a list of beautiful wedding cakes alternatives.
